The old Merindad de Uribe was formed in the Middle Ages by our entire region plus the parishes in the Nervión valley that are now part of the metropolitan area of Bilbao. Nowadays the territory that includes the Txorierri and Butrón valleys, together with the adjoining coastal municipalities, is known by the name of Uribe. In spite of its long common history and culture, the region is divided administratively into the Plentzia-Mungia region and the Txorierri Valley, which is administratively linked with the Greater Bilbao area.

Uribe is located in the centre-north of the Historical Territory of Bizkaia, close to Bilbao and very well connected by road with the leading cities in the north of the State. Bilbao airport, located in the municipality of Loiu, brings travellers from all around the world to our region.

The history of Uribe, and of the twenty-three municipalities it currently consists of (Arrieta, Bakio, Barrika, Berango, Derio, Erandio, Fruiz, Gamiz-Fika, Gatika, Gorliz, Larrabetzu, Laukiz, Lemoiz, Lezama, Loiu, Maruri-Jatabe, Meñaka, Mungia, Plentzia, Sondika, Sopelana, Urduliz and Zamudio), is marked by its strategic position so close to Bilbao and by its gentle relief. Our flat, gentle valleys, only separated by low hills, form the widest plains in Bizkaia, cut through by the Butrón and Asúa rivers, which created fertile agricultural meadows as they pass and, after a short while, flow into the Bay of Biscay. On the coastline of Uribe, the line of cliffs is not so rugged in some sections, creating small harbours and extensive beaches.

However, agriculture is still a sector with important activity in Uribe. Its high quality products, whose maximum exponent is the famous txakoli, have given this region a famous name in the gastronomic, oenologic and vinicultural world and are the current reflection of centuries of tradition.
